Insight Centre for Data Analytics ( is a joint initiative between researchers at University College Dublin, NUI Galway, University College Cork, and Dublin City University, as well as other partner institutions. It brings together a critical mass of more than 350 researchers from Ireland’s leading ICT centres to develop a new generation of data analytics technologies in a number of key application areas.


Enable – is a research programme ( ), under the Insight Centre for Data Analytics. Enable’s focus is on connecting communities to smart urban environments through the Internet of Things (IoT). It is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. An Enable testbed has already been created at Croke Park (Smart Croke Park), with the aim of allowing SME’s to trial and develop new IoT technologies.


Smart Dublin – Smart Dublin is an initiative of the four Dublin Local Authorities ( to engage with smart technology providers, researchers and citizens to solve challenges and improve city life. The project aims to position Dublin as a world leader in the development of new urban solutions, using open data, and with the city region as a test bed. A key initiative of the overall ‘Smart Dublin’ collaborative platform has been the establishment of various Testbeds (including Smart Docklands  ‘Smart DCU’ will be positioned as another key node of research, innovation and economic development activity within this overall Smart City initiative.


Enable, Smart Dublin and DCU are collectively funding this ‘Smart DCU’ projects facilitator role.


‘Smart DCU’ – is a new initiative being launched to bring together IoT enterprise, Smart City research and test bedding of IoT technologies and solutions, within the DCU (and partners) overall estate.  The aim is to rapidly deploy and develop testbeds, services and solutions, initially across 2 main DCU nodes of activity, namely the main academic campus (‘Smart Campus’), and Croke Park (‘Smart Stadium’), under the umbrella of the overall Smart Dublin initiative.  Areas and projects of interest include buildings/campus management, energy & sustainability, future transport, connected health/well-being, community engagement, IoT & data analytics test bedding, accelerator and incubator programmes, amongst other activities.  The ‘Smart DCU’ projects facilitator role outlined here, will involve working with academics, industry partners, SME’s and IoT enterprises (such as those based in DCU Alpha), in order to research, develop and test bed novel IoT/data analytics applications in the ‘Smart Stadium’ and ‘Smart Campus’ environments.  The Projects facilitator will also identify/catalyse innovative new demonstration projects, PoC’s and business models – using Croke Park and DCU main campus as the initial canvas, but with a view to wider implementation across the entire DCU estate in the longer term.  In addition, the role will involve the consideration of how the implementation and use of Big Data, Analytics and Smart City technologies will impact campus and city life in the decades to come.


Role Description

The main function of this fixed term full time role, will be to facilitate the flow of data from various Smart DCU projects to Enable researchers at DCU, thus ensuring that the world class data analytics research capabilities at Enable/DCU can connect with the IoT enterprise base within Smart Dublin generally. This individual will split their time across each of the 2 main nodes of activity (Smart Stadium 40%, Smart Campus 40%), while playing a key coordination role in tying all the activities together under the Smart Dublin umbrella initiative (20%).


This position will be based at both Dublin City University and the Smart City office in Dublin City Council, and will report to Insight’s Centre Director at DCU. The Smart Project Facilitator will be expected to collaborate closely with other members of the project teams (DCU Estates, DCU Alpha Executive Director) plus industry partners.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the coordination, planning and implementation of projects
  • Seek new partners and establish and develop new collaborative projects
  • Creating, maintaining and reporting on a “Score Card” for various projects, that enables monitoring of different aspects of each project including: operations; technical; data availability and accessibility; research activities; technical demonstrators; brand and PR associated with the project;
  • Ensuring the efficient project management of the activities associated with the various projects, including scheduling, chairing and creating minutes for regular meetings and working with project researchers, companies and stakeholders, to assist in the timely delivery of project objectives;
  • Ensure data collection from industry partners to facilitate Enable research projects;
  • Monitoring, collection and timely reporting of all project outputs, milestones, and deliverables to the Enable Management team and associated co-funding agencies;
  • Responsible for the operational project management of Smart DCU/Smart Dublin project collaborations;
  • Understanding the technology developments and IoT use cases underway in Enable, and communicating these advances and the use cases to DCU/DCC/Smart Dublin and collaborating companies;
  • Engaging with the IoT enterprise base in DCU Alpha (and its partners/network) to identify suitable technologies and solutions that are capable of being deployed under the Smart DCU initiative.
  • Coordinating DCU, DCC, Smart Dublin, Industry and Enable stakeholders to advance Smart initiatives and coordinating with the teams at DCU/DCC to ensure alignment of the research initiatives with relevant local, regional and national strategies;
  • Attending and demonstrating progress at showcase events, and, where necessary, preparing materials for showcasing;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Insight Director or his/her nominee


Experience and Criteria

  • Candidates must have a Primary Degree or equivalent and three years’ relevant work experience
  • Understanding of working and project management in a university/tech setting;
  • Previous experience in managing multiple projects across diverse science or engineering disciplines would be of considerable advantage;
  • Experience in managing projects in complex environments with multiple stakeholders and partners
  • Ability to engage new partnerships;
  • A strong interest in IoT/Smart City technology and its applications
  • Excellent written and oral proficiency in English (essential)
  • Able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in as part of a distributed team and to take responsibility to contribute to the overall success of the team.
  • Strong problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent analytical skills – can identify a problem/risk and propose solutions to multi-faceted problems (essential);
  • S/he will have excellent, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills – both written and verbal;
  • S/he will be an effective and positive communicator
  • Excellent time management skills and highly organized.
  • Flexible approach – available to work outside normal hours are required on an occasional basis (essential);
  • Resourceful / conscientious and self-motivated individual with a ‘can do attitude’ – ability to see tasks through to completion (essential);
  • Enjoy working both with people and independently



Desirable Knowledge and Experience:

  • Knowledge/desire to learn about latest Enable’s research and Smart City Technology Developments;
  • Knowledge/desire to learn about Dublin’s Technology (specifically IoT) Ecosystem and research landscape;
  • Strong desire to learn and make a difference on local and global scales


Salary *€47, 386 – €57,099
